Oh dear, how very sad.
I just went on site at OWW to check out if anyone had posted anything new for me to add to my list of reviews to do. Right there, on the front page is an entry listed as horror, for adults only and is 7,003 words long. And yes, this is a newbie. The sub title starts off as below, and this is NOT MY typo. It is as it appears on site.

RECOMEND AS EDITOR'S CHOICE (followed by title of work and author's name).

This tells me a lot about this person and I do hope he doesn't get utterly crushed by the possible flaming that might come his way.

Does everyone remember the first post they made? It surely had to be the next best thing since sliced bread and everyone would be totally bowled over by the brilliance of the story and the literary skill of the writer, wouldn't they? It is a hard thing to learn one has just taken a baby step but are nowhere near walking unassisted. It is also the first step on the road to publication; the wanting and needing to learn and to grow with others.

I have been on the site since the free Del Rey days and in all that time I have never seen anyone recommend themselves for an EC. The work might well be worth one for all I know.

I don't read huge subs unless they are for BFFs. I also try not to read subs from people who might not want to hear my opinion because it might not be a gushing glorification. I just hope the poor guy doesn't get torn to shreds because of his enthusiasm.

Oh. My.

Wow.

With a bonus typo.

I wonder if he thinks critiquers vote for ECs? Getting one, while I'm sure it's helpful to the author, isn't exactly equivalent to winning a lottery-style windfall....

I remember being hopping mad for days when I read my EC. When I had calmed down and thought it through with my mind plugged in and my crushed ego disengaged, I found it one of the most useful crits I have had, ever. That was after the Del Rey days, when they used to be worth something wonderful.

I also think you are right about him thinking the members vote for ECs. I guess there will be a sharp and painful learning curve for someone.

My very first sub was "A Tale of Two Moons" and I was sure it would be slammed. Fortunately, it wasn't.

I remember doing some stupid newbie stuff in the early days that make me blush to remember, but I don't think I was ever that clueless. Sheeshy weeshy.

I hope he DOES get slammed. Being a rookie, you tread carefully, not charge in and think to take over...

I wish I knew the secret to being chosen - or even considered - for EC.

That was worth a chuckle and a sigh. Being curious, I actually took a peek. This 7K is apparently part two of something larger. As you may have imagined, the first 1000 words are enough work for a single submission, but it isn't completely bad. However, it is of a vastly different quality than the author apparently believes. I guess all that encouragement he got didn't come from a writers' workshop. Maybe someone with the time and patience will be gentle. That wouldn't be me. The last time I tried to be honest with that much ego the result wasn't pretty.
